Note that the word "heritage" here refers to non-proprietary landrace grains and legumes, and to post-1880 modern crosses released more than 25 years ago. These non-proprietary heritage seeds can be freely propagated by farmers and sold as seed, whereas most modern varieties are proprietary and cannot be sold as seed except through the owners. Not all modern seed varietal ownership expires after 25 years from the time of release. If you choose to grow a modern variety careful check should be made, so that you do not become liable for the misuse of the seed as a heritage variety.
